Two Trails 05:11
Two trails, starting miles apart Not knowing the other exists, Each toward their own horizon they wind, Unaware of what they one day will find, Through life and through time they both grow, What beautiful sites they come to know, Two trails, moving closer now, So close that they almost could touch, But they will not meet on this mile, Fate has different plans for a little while, Until an unexpected change in the plan, Now they stand on the same piece of land, Roam now, try to find your place, We all reach the end but it isn’t a race, It’s the journey and the memories you make, We grow with every step that we take, One trail, Brought together now, They have so much to share of their worlds, Still With their own horizons of blue, But together they’ve found something true, They’re kindred souls pure and so rare, Now a bit of this walk they will share, One trail, just for a little while, They teach one another as they go, In time their directions must change, But a part of themselves they exchange, So when it happens that they reach that mile, They can both part ways with a smile, Roam now, try to find your place, We all reach the end but it isn’t a race, It’s the journey and the memories you make, We grow with every step that we take, Roam now, but when your paths collide, Don’t be afraid to help each other guide, It’s a gift when kindred spirits coincide, And share a brief moment of the ride, Two trails, Now they separate, To chase their own horizons and dreams, But if you trace them back to the start, You’ll find where they’re connected in the heart, Will they meet again down the line? No one knows but the power’s divine

Give me a pen to write some words out, I kind of like the way they sound, Give me a pen before they fade away, And the whiskey runs my ragged ship aground, Give me my strings to play some notes out, They just might capture what I feel inside, Give me my strings ‘fore I remember you’re gone, And I’ll strum a song with my heart as my guide, The words and the notes float together, They glide upon the air hand in hand, They make me feel you’re right there beside me, And in that moment I never want to land, The song all alone may seem fleeting, But in my soul it always remains, It’s the closest thing I’ve got to you, And in my heart it plays on, true, Until the day that I see you again.

Standoff 04:01
There comes a time you realize, The truths you’re taught are someone else’s lies, Those you thought were the ones to follow, Are nothing more than puppets, fake and hollow, But you worked so hard, you spent so long, Do you keep on this road knowing that it’s wrong? Or now With this new truth you’ve seen, Do you change course to alter the machine? Standoff x3 Standoff with the false regime In that time you realize, You will not live for someone else’s lies, Those who one time praised your name, become the first to shower you in blame, You called them out, you said they’re wrong, Now the puppet master’s anger rages strong, And with Every punch that they throw, You plant new seeds of change and pray they grow, Pray they Grow x4

This world can be hard, It brought you pain, How I would fight to take it all away, To see you smile, To hear your laugh, To hold your hand and walk with you today, You are so strong, You tame the world, You are the storm, you are the rainbow shining through, And when you hurt, It isn’t right, There is no sense to make of this it’s true, The world, it can be dark, There is fear and there is pain, But you, you are the sun, And when you rise the day will sing it’s song again, You give me hope, You care so much, The way you live reminds me what is real, I’ve seen you love, I’ve seen you fight, Knowing you is so incredible to feel, What can I do? What can I say? I’d do it all if it would help some way, To show you just, How much you mean, Like the sun that brings the earth a brand new day, The world, it can, be dark There is fear and there is pain, But you, you are the sun, And when you rise the day will sing it’s song again, In my mind, I see, you there, The evening breeze, the sunset hanging in the sky, Your smile, it is the light, A light that guides me, guides me through the night.

As a mist of rain falls from the sky I stop myself to ask of why My heart and mind just can’t see eye to eye, And to my ears there comes a sound, Like a choir flying heaven bound, The voice of one I loved last time around, A gust of wind it sends a blast, A frigid chill of days gone past, How the hell does life go by so fast? I may be wrong I may be right, But will you take my hand tonight? I’m blind your timeless grace has stole my sight, Oh walk on down the road x3 On the ground beneath my feet, There sits a flower red and sweet, The kind that make a memory complete, To a time we ran free and wild, The days were warm and the nights were mild, Those days of joy where I felt like a child, Now To my eye there comes a tear, Those memories I love so dear, Faded now, a casualty of years, But just like then you feel so right, Will you take my hand tonight? your timeless grace again has stole my sight, Oh walk on down the road x3 As a mist of rain falls from the sky, I stop myself to ask of why, My heart and mind just can’t see eye to eye, And to my ears there comes a sound, Like A choir flying heaven bound, The voice of one I loved last time around, The voice that I still love this time around.

This system rotted and hollow, Businessmen and their bottom line, They only care about health or people, When they’re connected to a dollar sign, Come now let’s take a picture, Post it up for the world to see, Have marketing call them heroes, Then turn their back when it comes to need, Don’t pretend you care about people, It’s bold and easy to read, Don’t pretend you care about people, Your heart is driven by greed, Well that’s just the way we do things, It’s the American way, The rich get what they came for, And the poor, well they can’t pay, Where lives are nothing but numbers, Red and green on computer screens, Keep quiet and do what we tell you, You’re just a gear in the money machine, Don’t pretend you care about people, It's bold and easy to read, Don’t pretend you care about people, Your heart is driven by greed, Don’t pretend you care about people, You don’t even know their names, Don’t pretend you care about people, Their lives are not a game, Let’s reach out and help somebody, Just not those from that zip code, We need a return on investment, We don’t make much down those roads, That may seem like backwards thinking, But this tree’s not rooted in health, Dig deeper and tell me what you find, The system is rooted in wealth, Why do we burn out? To care is inherently human, To push profit from pain, inhumane, The reason we help is to lift one another, Which this system continues to feign, To heal it reveals we are mortal, We’re here a short time this you’ll find, I want you to live out the most from your years, May all your tomorrows be kind, That’s why I’m here, To see you through, I’ll do my best, To care for you, We are all worthy of empathy, And your health not contingent on wealth, And respected as you, for we are all human, No matter what hand society dealt. To me it should be based on people, At the heart this should guide what we do, On the scale of life a soul weighs far more, Than a fist full of dollars or two, That’s why I’m here, To see you through, I’ll do my best, To care for you.

This room, empty now, But not before, there was much more, Silence now, without a sound, It Used to sing, more than anything, years have gone, and so have you, This place takes on a different hue, These memories they haunt it’s true, But a welcome ghost of what I knew, These memories I keep of you. This tree, where I would sit, Deep in thought, at all life brought, You found me there, and I am still, But new limbs have grown, since last you’ve shown, Years have gone, and so have you, The leaves they bloom a different hue, These memories they haunt it’s true But a welcome ghost of what I knew, These memories I keep of you. This river, still it flows, And ships float on, down currents strong, Behind the trees, along the bank, The gold sun sets, And I won’t forget, Years have gone, and so have you, And the sky It burns a different hue, These memories they haunt it’s true, But a welcome ghost of what I knew, These memories I keep of you.

I grew up believing in the land of the free, But free for every person no matter who they may be, Intolerance is a cancer that kills a sheltered mind, Step outside yourself oh the wonders you’ll find, Don't tread on me, these words ring true, But true for all, not just the few, Your words mean nothing while your treads wear thin, When you walk on those who aren't your kin, If you want respect, then give respect, If you want love, give all your love, Lend out a hand, cause hate to cease, Our time is short, please give me peace, Who am I to tell a stranger They cannot love the one they choose? For when a heart finds its sole companion, That's not the business of me or you, And if I said you couldn't hold the one you love so dear tonight, How would that feel, if it were you, love is every person's right. If you want respect, then give respect, If you want love, give all your love, Lend out a hand, cause hate to cease, Our time is short, please give me peace, It shouldn't matter who you pray to, Or the epidermal color you wear, On this rock we spin together, It is the same green earth we share, I see the war and hate around me, I hear the anger in the masses’ voice, But my heart still beats with hope now, It is my life peace is my choice, If you want respect, then give respect, If you want love, give all your love, Lend out a hand cause hate to cease, Our time is short, please give me peace, Give me peace for my daughters, May they do what I could never do, And when they climb that highest mountain, May they gain all that they are due, For they are strong and they're determined, And they will make this world a better place, And as their father I will teach them, To take on inequality face to face, If you want respect, then give respect, If you want love, give all your love, Lend out a hand cause hate to cease, Our time is short, please give me peace, I grew up believing in the land of the free, And I will die believing in a land that is free, But history is on repeat, and man craves division, From our mistakes we must learn, it’s time for our revision.

Loving you, Is all I can do, You grabbed hold of my heart, But it was yours from the start, No, I can’t think straight, In your eyes, Such kindness lies, You’re all I can see, Will you walk with me? No, I can’t think straight, I thought I knew, What I was to do, Then you came by, You taught me to fly, No, I can’t think straight, The warmth of your smile, The calm in your touch, The red in your cheeks when I make you blush The joy in your laugh, The wind in your hair, That’s all I can think of when you’re not there, No, I can’t think straight, Loving you, Is all I can do, Right from the start, You wrote a song in my heart, No, I can’t think straight, I love you, and I can’t think straight.

Face the Day 03:57
Where does a mind go when it’s lost its dream, With no direction, Bound to wander it would seem, Forever lost, or does it find a way? The map’s in you, Go on and face the day. Where does a heart go when it loses love, At one time full, now a lack thereof, Does it halt, or will it’s rhythm play? The conductor’s you, go on and face the day. Where does a soul go when it loses hope, When all seems lost, how does it cope, Will The fire die out or embers catch and stay. The spark is you, go on and face the day. Where does a mind go when it’s lost its dream, Where does a heart go when it loses love, Where does a soul go when it loses hope, They stay with you, go on and face the day,

about

100% of the proceeds from this album go toward feeding children without enough to eat in Southeastern North Carolina through the wonderful organization, Nourish NC.

Writing and recording this music has been helpful for me to work through many of the different pieces of my pandemic year. Each piece was written and recorded in various settings, since my year consisted of working through the pandemic as a family physician in multiple different places. The LoFi acoustic recording style combined with each song's story paints the picture of my process and my version of "Working through some stuff".

There are quite a few different themes touched on in this album. From the importance of kindred spirits in our lives, finding strength within yourself to rise in difficult situations, memories from your past that never leave you, many are situations that we all face at one point or another in life.

Other themes draw from the current pandemic and dealing with systemic issues within medicine and society as a whole. The Business of Medicine/The Heart of Medicine is a two song cycle looking at two sides of the medical system coin, the first a protest song and the second the reason we keep coming back everyday. Standoff looks at what happens when you begin to question a big system, composed to recreate the sound of an old spaghetti western third act standoff. I wanted to bring that same feel as well as pay homage to one of the best composers from that era, Ennio Morricone. Give Me Peace takes a broader look at society as a whole using the definition of peace given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, "True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice."

I hope that people enjoy these songs. They have helped me reflect. I hope that people can connect with them in a similar way.
